Jonathan Toubin, who VICE Magazine calls “the only DJ we actually like” and Rolling Stone declares “the most liked man in the soul music scene,” was awarded “BEST DJ” in The Village Voice 60th Anniversary “BEST OF NYC.” Juxtaposing raw, wild, and uncommon original 45s by unsung artists loud and on the beat for today’s dance floor, Jonathan Toubin and his New York Night Train party machine’s persistent nightly work has carved out a unique space in contemporary culture and influenced scores of DJs and parties everywhere. While best known for the world’s most popular and prolific soul party, the Soul Clap and Dance-Off, and NYC’s biggest and longest-running weekly rock’n’roll dance, Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down!, he’s also spent the last decade turning over 2000 parties at hundreds of nightclubs, rock concerts, and major music festivals on five continents – from Bonnaroo to Benicassim. NY Night Train’s soul proprietor is the first DJ given his own entire night at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night’s Swing and the first DJ with an entire night of official South By Southwest showcases dedicated to his dance party (where his Clap has become the festival’s annual official closer since 2011). He’s also the first living DJ with compilations on the legendary Norton Records (with five Souvenirs of the Soul Clap LPs)
“The most-liked man in the soul music scene” by Rolling Stone “New York’s best DJ” by VICE DJ, founder, and proprietor of the New York Night Train production company, Jonathan Toubin is best known for his distinctive parties and high energy dance party sets comprised exclusively of little-known original 45rpm records from the 1950s and 1960s. He’s created the sub-genre “maximum rock and soul” to describe his sound that combines wild, upbeat, and exquisite rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and soul 45s with fast cutting on the beat. While his approach to old vinyl involves contemporary DJ aesthetics and a unique style, according to the New York Times, the DJ’s fare is “cleaner and more appreciative of American pop music history than much of the rest.” His best known event, which is also the world’s most popular and prolific soul party, the New York Night Train Soul Clap and Dance-Off, currently has draws up to 1000 patrons monthly at the Brooklyn Bowl, had an entire night dedicated to it at Lincoln Center Midsummer Night Swing, is the annual official South By Southwest closing party, and plays in dozens of international markets and major festivals annually. In over 1600 gigs since 2007, Toubin has appeared in hundreds of cities – everywhere from Jerusalem to Perth, Australia. He currently has DJ mixes available.
Persistently throwing some of the world’s most distinctive parties since 2006, and juxtaposing raw, wild, and uncommon original 7-inch vinyl sides by unsung artists on the beat for today’s dance floor, Jonathan Toubin’s idiosyncratic nightly approach to vintage rock and soul music has carved out a unique space in contemporary culture and influenced scores of DJs and dance parties everywhere. Though best known internationally for throwing the 21st Century’s most popular soul vinyl party Soul Clap and Dance-Off, and NYC’s biggest and longest-running weekly rock’n’roll dance, Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down!, he’s also spent the last fifteen years turning over 2500 gigs at hundreds of nightclubs, art spaces, all-ages warehouses, afterhours, rock concerts, and dozens of major music festivals on five continents – from Bonnaroo to Benicassim. His revolutionary New York Night Train dance parties don’t only feature his own DJing but also often include live performances by the likes of Shannon and The Clams, Roky Erickson, Thee Oh Sees, Big Freedia, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Sun Ra Arkestra, Kool Keith, David Johansen, and hundreds more. Toubin has turned platters at live concerts by everyone from Jack White to Kendrick Lamar to LCD Soundsystems to Patti Smith. He’s currently also an owner/operator of New York’s TV Eye night club and Shady Spex sunglasses.
